From Eastmoor's Swim Program Director

Dear Parents,
Welcome to our Swim More at Eastmoor learn-to-swim program!  We hope that you will find our progression program to be effective as well as nurturing.  As the director, and in terms of our instructors, we are committed to preparing and working hard to teach your son/daughter how to swim the right way.  Our program is designed to be “goal driven” and “technique oriented”.  The program is operated in the station teaching method.  These stations begin with gradual water adaptation and continue through competitive stroke refinement.  Hopefully, you will find that we can meet the needs of your young swimmer, no matter what “level” he or she is at.

The term “goal driven” means that we have ten well-defined skills that represent “graduation points” to the next station in the system.  We hope to help your swimmer build confidence in the water with the passing of each station.  Please be aware that passing will not happen automatically, but will be based on successful demonstration and mastery of the vital skill(s) learned in each station.  We will constantly be spiraling our curriculum to insure that learned skills would not be lost in the process.

“Technique-oriented” means that we are concerned with teaching proper stroke mechanics from the very beginning.  Correcting errors is a much more difficult process later in the developmental progression.  Our instructors will aim to make learning fun, while emphasizing correct learning from the first lesson. One nice aspect to this type of progression program is that your child can “progress” at his or her own pace.

Dates and times:
Lessons are offered Monday through Thursday (with the exception of the 1st week of Session 1 which will be Tuesday through Friday) at 10:35, 11:05, and 4:05 and they last 25 minutes.  Please note that each station cannot be offered at each time of the day.  The 4:05 afternoon time will also have to overcome varied instructors and mixed station classes.  This is difficult for scheduling reasons.

Sign up dates are:
Saturday May 29th from noon to 2pm
Wednesday June 2nd from 4pm to 6pm
Saturday June 5th from 1pm to 3pm

Lesson Dates:
Session 1:  Tues. June 8th- Fri. June 11th and Mon. June 14th-Thur. June 17th
**We will skip the week of June 21st due to a home swim meet on Wed, June 23rd
Session 2:  June 28th -- July 1st and July 5th -- July 8th
Session 3:  July 12th -- 15th and July 19th -- 22nd

We will try to have lessons every day (even on colder weather days), because there will not be any make up times available to us with the swim team schedule on Fridays.  If lessons are cancelled due to weather, we will just continue on with the next scheduled meeting time.  The cost per two-week session is $35 and we will accept $20 for a one-week session if conflicts arise.  I am going to try to limit class sizes to 6 kids per instructor to keep the swimmer/instructor ratio reasonable for learning and repetitions.

Thank you for choosing our program and please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, or concerns.  Each swimmer will receive a certificate and then a sticker for each station that is passed so please do not lose the certificate.

Sincerely,

Kent Dertinger
Club Manager and Program Director

There will not be make-ups due to inclement weather as swim meets are on Fridays and many of the instructors and lesson participants will be at the meets on those days. That being said, lessons will go on even when it is a bit cold out. Note: One week sessions will be available to fill classes to accommodate members with vacation conflicts, but priority will be given to two week participants.

Please plan on making it with cash or check to one of these sign up windows to get your children signed up for swim lessons. Classes are 25 minutes long. I will have a sign up table set up at the pool during these three times only. I will also accept walk ups for session 1 on June 8th from 8:30am - 10:00am prior to the start of our lessons program. It is important that you get your children signed up and paid for early so that we have numbers to help us organize our stations and instructors appropriately. We expect all swim team members (especially 10 & under) to participate in our lessons program as the instructor to swimmer ratio is much better in lessons and individual skills will be an emphasis. Participation in lessons builds a strong swim program. Thank you for your cooperation and help with getting our young swimmers involved with lessons.

All classes are scheduled to be 25 minutes beginning and ending on time! The swim staff will begin testing children to determine appropriate level.

The cost for a two week session is $35 and $20 for a one week session. We can accept cash or checks made payable to Eastmoor Swim & Tennis Club.
